Here's the problem. You told your AI assistant about the pricing decision three weeks ago. Today it drafts an email that contradicts it. The transcript is technically still there — somewhere in a scroll of 40 conversations — but the decision isn't anywhere. It was never captured as a decision at all.
Chat history is a record of words. Executive work runs on something else entirely: decisions and their rationale, commitments and their owners, relationships and their context, questions that are still open. Those are structured things with lifecycles. A transcript flattens them into prose and forgets which parts still matter.
What memory means in IEVA
IEVA's working prototype keeps memory as transparent, human-readable files: preferences, audiences, writing voice, working patterns, professional context, project state. Nothing hides in an embedding you can't inspect. If the system believes something, you can open the file and read it.
The product direction generalizes this into persistent executive memory containing:

- Permissions and retention rules
The test: can you correct it?
The difference between memory and a black box is correctability. In practice that means three questions any memory system should pass:
- Can you see what it believes?
- Can you trace where each belief came from?
- Can you fix or delete a belief — and does the fix stick?
A system that fails these isn't remembering; it's accumulating. And accumulated context you can't audit is a liability in exactly the settings where executive AI matters most.
Decision continuity is the product
The deliverable isn't recall — it's continuity. Monday's decision should still be decided on Thursday, with the reasoning attached, unless someone deliberately reopens it. That's what lets an operating layer move from information retrieval to decision continuity, and it's why memory — reviewable, attributable, correctable memory — is the foundation everything else in IEVA stands on.
